  • Description

In the small south Angolan town of Perera D'Eca an exchange of prisoners of war brought scenes of conviviality between representatives of Angola and South Africa. The two countries swapped eight South Africans held in Angola, and three Cubans who had been held in South Africa.

SYNOPSIS: The eight South Africans were flown to the exchange, and they displayed their excitement at being released. They had been held since the Angolan civil war in 1975.

The exchange took place under the control of the International Red Cross. Seven of the men returned were captured during the civil war when South Africa supported guerrilla movements opposed to President Agostinho Neto. The eighth had accidentally driven his vehicle across the border. None complained of ill-treatment in Angola. All expressed their delight at being free.

The three Cubans were also ending three years in captivity. Spokesman Carles Mesa was asked if he had heard of the exchange in the news media
