Background: In Lebanon, the authorities are summing up and clearing the damage done by Israeli aircraft and ground units during last weekend's action against areas where Palestinian guerrillas have bases.
The Israeli action brought in the Lebanese army. According to a military communique from Beirut, 61 soldiers were killed, wounded or posted as missing after the thrust. The number of civilian and Palestinian guerrilla casualties was not announced. The Lebanese also said they had inflicted heavy casualties on the Israelis.
A number of villages were severely damaged in the israeli attack and two bridges across the Litani river were blown up.
SYNOPSIS: The wreckage of bridges across the river Litani in southern Lebanon... blasted by israeli bombs, rockets and guns during the brief military incursion last weekend. The israelis blew out two important bridges, apparently to stop the northward flight of Palestinian guerrillas who had been using southern Lebanon as a base from which to infiltrate Israel.
While Israeli jets harassed the guerrillas from the air, an armoured force, estimated at brigade strength, punched deeper into Lebanon than the israelis had ever been before.
Jouaya town was one of the casualties. The israelis destroyed houses suspected of having been used by guerrillas. Inevitably, there were civilian casualties as well, although no figure has been announced.
The Lebanon's small but well equipped army resisted the Israelis and claimed to have inflicted heavy casualties on them. But they also sustained losses... sixty-one soldiers either killed, wounded or reported missing in action. After the Israelis went back across the hilly border into their own territory, the Lebanese began the job of toting up the destruction and doing something about it.
