Background: On Sunday (12 January) Zanzibar celebrated the 11th anniversary of the 1964 revolution which overthrew the former Sultanate and established the rule of Zanzibar's Afro-Shirazi Party.

More than 100,000 people attended a parade at Amaan Stadium which climaxed the week-long festivities in the country. Rallies also were held across mainland Tanzania to mark the occasion.

President Julius Nyerere from mainland Tanzania with which Zanzibar merged about 11 years ago, was among the special guests at Sunday's parade.

Speaking at the mass rally, the Chairman of the Zanzibar's Revolutionary Council, Aboud Jumbe, called for a greater economic effort to make the country self-sufficient in food, and to combat diseases destroying it sole export crop -- cloves.
