Turkey's Caretaker Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has received an almost unanimous vote of confidence, as chairman of his Republican People's Party, the RPP. Despite the heavy RPP defeat in recent mid-term election,s party members got together at an emergency conference to pledge renewed support for Mr. Ecevit.
SYNOPSIS: The vote of confidence had been Mr. Ecevit's suggestion, as had the calling of the special party conference in Ankara. Beforehand, he had told reporters he wanted to launch a counter attack on the RPP members who had criticised his leadership and blamed him for the party's defeat at the hands of the right-wing Justice Party in the October elections.
Two leading Ecevit opponents present were Veteran politicians Ali Topuz and Deniz baykal. They had been seeking to remove the party's top committee, the General Administrative Board, as well as Mr. Ecevit.
Mr. Ecevit's opponents had intended to force a vote of confidence on the General Administrative Board. But this plan failed when the entire Board resigned of its own accord just a few days before the conference.
Things then went further wrong for Mr. Ecevit's opponents. In the final session on Monday (5 November), after a speech criticising his opponents and backing the policies of the General Administrative Board, Mr. Ecevit wad re-elected as party chairman by a large majority. Of the one thousand five hundred RPP delegates, only twenty voted against him. One of his next tasks was to meet Justice Party leader Suleyman Demirel, who has announced his interest in a joint RPP-Justice party coalition.
