  • Description

THE BIGGEST PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS TO HIT THE SUDAN WITHIN 10 YEARS HAS COVERED AT LEAST 250-THOUSAND SQUARE MILES WITH THE INSECTS.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE SUDAN MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE HAS SAID THAT ANTI-LOCUST TEAMS IN THE NORTHERN, CENTRAL AND KHARTOUM PROVINCES, HAD SUCCESSFULLY DESTROYED MILLIONS OF THE INSECTS BEFORE THEY REACHED CULTIVATED AREAS BUT MILLIONS MORE WERE STILL AT LARGE. SPRAYING AIRCRAFT AND HELICOPTERS FROM ETHIOPIA ARE HELPING IN THE FLIGHT AGAINST THE LOCUSTS.

THE SUDAN IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO LOCUST INVASION FROM TWO AREAS. THE MOST DANGEROUS OF THE INSECTS IS THE DESERT LOCUST, WHICH COMES FROM SAUDI ARABIA, ETHIOPIA AND SOMALIA ON THE EAST AND THROUGH THE LYBYAN DESERT FROM CHAD, ALGERIA AND MOROCCO ON THE WEST. EARLIER THIS YEAR A PLAGUE OF 28 SWARMS HIT THE SUDAN. THIS YEAR MORE THAN 100 SWARMS HAVE BEEN SEEN.

MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED VEHICLES ARE BEING USED IN THE BATT AGAINST THE PLAGUE. SOME ARE EQUIPPED FOR SPRAYING, SOME FOR DUSTING, AND OTHERS USED SIMPLY FOR THE TRANSPORTATION OF MEN AND INSECTICIDES.
