  • Description

The touring Soviet Union Army ice hockey team were stopped from recording their third straight victory against Canadian National League teams when the Canadens held them to a 3-all draw in Montreal on Wednesday (31 December).

The Soviet side had won both their previous matches against Canadian teams, but they had their hands full against the Canadians.

The home side's strong offensive play soon had the visitors in trouble, but 23-year-old Soviet goalkeeper, Valdislav Tretiak saved his side from defeat by stopping 35 out of 38 shots at his goal.

On the other hand, the Canadians goalkeeper had to contend with only nine on target shots during the whole match.

Tretiak also played a major role in the Soviet's 7-3 victory over the New York Rangers during the Army team's U.S. tour last week. On that occasion he stopped 38 out of 41 shots.
