  • Description

A large crowd turned up at the Dacca race grounds on Saturday (1 May) to hear a speech by Major-General Ziaur Rahman, Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Army.

It was the first public appearance in Dacca by the Major-General since he emerged as the most powerful figure in the country after leading a successful coup last November against the regime which assassinated Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman three months earlier.

In a public meeting which coincided with the observance of May Day, General Zia, as he is usually referred to in Bangladesh, attacked India for what he described as an "unfriendly posture" towards her small neighbour.

He criticised India for "harbouring some misguided young men in order to motivate them to create trouble in bangladesh".

He said these young men fled the country soon after the new regime took over and India was now helping them to launch an attack on Bangladesh.

The General's speech came only hours after reports circulated in Bangladesh that India had amassed troops along their mutual border.
