  • Description

Youth had its say at the United Nations during the 10-day session of the World Youth Assembly, but the result was undignified.

When two representatives of Angolan Liberation movements challenged each other's credentials on Wednesday (July 15), a fight broke out in the Chamber, during a session of the Assembly's Peace Committee.

An Algerian delegate denounced Mr. Paul Touba, representative of the Kinshasa-bases Angolan Revolutionary Government-in-exile (GRAE), as "a puppet of the Portuguese regime".

The Algerian claimed that the delegate of the rival left-wing Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) was the only worthy representative of Angola's liberation struggle.

Mr. Touba and the Algerian had a spirited struggle, before being separated by security officers and other delegates.

Later Mr. Touba was given the floor, and cat calls, banging of desks and general pandemonium broke out as a consequence. The delegates continued their banging until Mr. Touba, still fighting to have his say, was forcibly removed from the Conference room by U.N. Security guards.

The Youth Assembly, which began on July 9 and was one of the major events in the U.S.'s 25th. Anniversary Celebrations has been marked by the Peace Committee's unruly debates, demonstrations and walkouts.

The Assembly met in plenary session on July 16 for the first time and among the proposals on the agenda were an appeal to Pope Paul to allow Catholics free use of contraceptives, a decision to reject the legalisation of Marijuana, and the adoption of a world language.
