  • Description

Five bandits who hijacked more than a million dollars worth of gems from a delivery service Friday (8 November) lost the loot when they forgot to assign a driver to the getaway car who knew how to operate a manual gearshift.

As a result the man, who was disguised as a policeman, abandoned the car a short distance away at the site of a building being demolished. After the man fled, police said, workmen drove the car on to the demolition site and started looting it.Not one of the 25 to 30 workmen who witnessed the hijacking said a work to police.

Police recovered $750,000 worth of gems in the car and at least $200,000 from one of the workmen.Five workmen were arrested.

Police assumed the bandits got away with some of the loot and it was only after the workmen began stealing from each other and bragging to drinking companions about their haul that police realized what had happened.A private policeman, employed on the site, found a packet of diamonds hidden in a rusty boiler and yesterday (12 November) more than 50 policemen and F.B.I.agents began a minute inspection of the site.

The men had seen the bandit's trouble trying to drive the car, but believing him a policemen had hooted at him and refused his pleas for help in getting the vehicle started. The man had slid behind the wheel after companions had ordered the messengers who were carrying the jewels to get out and had driven them away in a locked panel truck.
