  • Description

On Route 30, twelve miles South of Phnom Penh, on Saturday (23 March) government troops staged a counter-attack to halt Khmer Rouge rebel unite trying to advance on the southern edge of the capital.

The Route which was the scene of heavy fighting in September last year, has been closed for three months. The Government has made little effort to re-open the route.

The government's main effort has been concentrated on re-opening the important routes to the coast in the west and Saigon to the south along Highway One.

To the north of the capital, the government had launched a major offensive on 21 March to recapture the rebel-held city of Oudong.

The Route 30 attack was mounted by men of the Seocnd Division backed by a squadron of armour, mortar and artillery units. They had halted the rebel advance by midday, but the commander of the operation said that his troops would not advance any further. He hoped to stabilise the southern front by patrol reconnaissance.
