    PRESIDENT RADHAKRISHNAN AND PRIME MINISTER SHASTRI OF INDIA LED THE NATION IN CEREMONIES YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO PAY HOMAGE TO THE MEMORY OF THE LATE PRIME MINISTER NEHRU, WHO WAS CREMATED ON THE BANKS OF THE JUMNA RIVER A YEAR AGO.

    THE CEREMONY ON THE RIVER BANK, AT THE SITE OF THE FUNERAL PYRE, OPENED WITH BUGLERS PLAYING "THE LAST POST". PRESIDENT RADHAKRISHNAN THEN WALKED BAREFOOT TO THE SPOT WHERE THE FUNERAL PYRE HAD BLAZED, AND LAID A WREATH. PRIME MINISTER SHASTRI AND HIS WIFE, MEMBER OF THE CABINET, AND THOUSANDS OF ORDINARY CITIZENS THEN FILED PAST.

    THE CREMATION SITE IS TO BE DEVELOPED AS THE PRINCIPAL MEMORIAL TO MR NEHRU, AND IS TO BE KNOWN AS THE "SHANTI VANA" (FOREST OF PEACE).

    AS THE SUN ROSE, CROWDS GATHERED AT MR NEHRU'S RESIDENCE, WHICH IS NOW A PERMANENT NEHRU MEMORIAL MUSEUM. A SHORT SERVICE WAS HELD, WITH READINGS FROM HINDU SACRED TEXTS...

    IN THE EVENING, MR SHASTRI ADDRESSED A PUBLIC MEETING IN THE RAM LILA GROUNDS, A SPOT THAT WAS EXTREMELY POPULAR WITH MR NEHRU FOR ADDRESSING CROWDS IN DELHI.

    AFTER HIS ADDRESS, IN WHICH MR SHASTRI URGED THE INDIAN PEOPLE TO COMPLETE THE WORK BEGUN BY NR NEHRU, A BURNING TORCH WAS PRESENTED TO THE PRIME MINISTER. THE TORCH, WHICH HAS BEEN CARRIED 25,000 MILES (40,000 KILOMETRES) THROUGH ALL THE STATES OF INDIA, WAS THEN TAKEN TO MR NEHRU'S HOME WHERE IT WILL BURN PERPETUALLY.
