  • Description

With the approach of the Congo's first general elections this month, extra troops and police went on parade at Bakwamulumba in the troubled Luluabourg Region to 'show the flag' after a further outburst of inter-tribal killings and lootings Apr 20.

Extra security measures eased the tension: as troops patrolled in strength natives caught in the tribal conflicts returned to their homes - in many cases to find them wrecked in the riots, with their few possessions scattered on the ground.

The repatriates are members of the Lulua tribe who in the attacks by their traditional rivals, the Baluba warriors, lost seven of their people including a woman and child. More than 30 Lulua were seriously injured by the raiding warriors and 300 huts burnt and looted.

In Luluabourg Apr 26 troops from the local garrison paraded before Belgian Lieut-Gen. Janssens, C-I-C of Security Forces, to reassure citizens of the Forces' presence and alertness following a threat by Lulua chieftains in neighboring regions to expel the Balubas from the Luluabourg Region. The chieftains warned if the Security Forces ignored their threat, all Lulua warriors would march on Luluabourg themselves and carry out the expulsions.
