Background: THE SYDNEY-HOBART YACHT RACE HAS BEEN WON BY THE SOUTH AMERICAN YACHT "STORMVOGEL" IN A TIME OF THREE DAYS, TWENTY HOURS AND THIRTY MINUTES.

STORMVOGEL, A PLYWOOD KETCH BUILT IN 1961, CROSSED THE FINISHING LINE SOME 60 MILES AHEAD OF THE NEAREST RIVAL WITH ONLY A LIGHT BREEZE AS SHE MADE HER WAY UP THE RIVER DERWENT ON THE LAST LEG OF THE 680 MILE (1100KM) COURSE.

THE SECOND YACHT TO CROSS THE FINISHING LINE WAS THE HOBART BUILT SLOOP BALANDRA. THE BALANDRA WAS LAUNCHED ONLY A FEW WEEKS AGO.

HOBART TURNED OUT IN FORCE TO GIVE ITS TRADITIONAL WELCOME TO STORMVOGEL AS SHE SLIPPED ACROSS THE FINISHING LINE SOME NINE HOURS AHEAD OF BALANDRA. STORMVOGEL, WHICH WAS SKIPPERED BY PETER LINDEBERG, LOST ALL CHANCE OF TURNING IN A RECORD TIME FOR THE RACE WHEN SHE WAS BECALMED FIRST IN BASS STRAIT AND LATER IN STORM, BAY. SHE WAS ABOUT 17 HOURS SHORT OF THE RECORD TIME SET UP IN 1962 BY THE AMERICAN YACHT ONDINE.
