Background: West German Jochen Mass and Belgian Jacky Ickx won an international sports car race at Silverstone in England on Sunday (15 May). Porsche cars took the first three places.
SYNOPSIS: The world's top motor racing drivers were included in the field and one of the most exciting facets was the British debut of the 200 miles+ (320 kms) an hour turbo-charged Porsche 935-77s. Also included in the field was an Aston Martin, destined for this year's Le Mans, and a BMW 320.
But Mass and Ickx, in car number one, had little trouble in winning.
Rolf Stommelen of West Germany and Toine Hezemans of Holland were third.
The six-hour race is the third round in the World Championship of Makes, the premier series for high performance, production-based touring cars. It's the second year in succession that such a race has been held at Silverstone.
Mass and Ickx used their formula one experience to good effect during the race. They sped through 674 miles (1078 kms) at an average speed of 112.40 miles (179.80 kms) an hour.
This Porsche, driven by Briton John Fitzpatrick and Frenchman Bob Wollek held the lead initially. But they finished second after being forced to make a late pit stop to change brake pads.
Mass and Ickx both have a string of international titles to their credits. And Mass set a new lap record at Silverstone with a time of 120.90 miles (193 kms) an hour. Ickx has won the Le Mans 24 hour race three times.
