ANKRAH: "THIS WAS AN ACT OF A VERY SMALL SECTION OF THE ARMY RECONNAISSANCE REGIMENT. THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ACT ARE NOW IN CUSTODY. THE GHANA ARMED FORCES AS A WHOLE REMAIN LOYAL TO THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, AND THERE IS NO CAUSE FOR ALARM. THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL AND THE PEOPLE OF GHANA WISH TO ASSURE THE WORLD THAT THE INVESTMENT THEY ARE MAKING IN GHANA REMAINS UNDISTURBED. BY THIS MORNING'S EVENTS. THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL POLICIES WHICH CREATED FAVOURABLE INVESTMENT CONDITIONS REMAIN UNCHANGED, AND WE WISH TO REITERATE THE GOOD NAME OF GHANA, GHANA'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS THEM AND FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURS AND WELL-WISHERS ARE COMPLETELY UNAFFECTED. ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE N.L.C. ARE SAFE. I HAVE SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT WE WILL HAND OVER POWER WITH THE LEAST DELAY. WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT. WE WILL NOT RUSH THROUGH BECAUSE OF SUCH INSIGNIFICANT COUPS. WE WILL STILL MAINTAIN OUR MOMENTUM."

Background: THE CHAIRMAN OF THE GHANAIAN NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, GENERAL ANKRAH, TOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE IN ACCRA ON MONDAY THAT THE ABORTIVE COUP OF A GROUP OF DISSIDENT SOLDIERS EARLY ON MONDAY MORNING WAS INSIGNIFICANT, AND THERE WAS NO CAUSE FOR ALARM.

GENERAL ANKRAH, IN A STATEMENT TO THE CONFERENCE, SAID THE MAJORITY OF THE ARMED FORCES IN GHANA REMAINED LOYAL TO THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL. THE COUP WAS ATTEMPTED BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMY RECONNAISSANCE SQUADRON UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THEIR COMMANDER, LIEUTENANT SAM ARTHUR. GENERAL ANKRAH SAID THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ATTEMPTED OVERTHROW OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL WERE NOW IN CUSTODY.

THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE AND COMMANDER OF THE ARMY, LIEUTENANT GENERAL KOTOKA, WAS KILLED IN THE ATTEMPTED COUP. THERE WAS A DAY OF MOURNING THROUGHOUT GAHAN YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). IT WAS GENERAL KOTOKA WHO FORMALLY ANNOUNCED THE DISMISSAL OF DOCTOR NKRUMAH'S GOVERNMENT IN FEBRUARY, 1966.

IN A BROADCAST TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GENERAL, GENERAL ANKRAH SAID GENERAL KOTOKA WAS A LOYAL AND DEDICATED SOLDIER.

THE SITUATION IN ACCRA IS REPORTED TO BE CALM, ALTHOUGH THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF JUBILANT DEMONSTRATIONS IN FAVOUR OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION PARTY.

GENERAL ANKRAH TOLD THE NEWS CONFERENCE THAT LIEUTENANT ARTHUR HAD NAMED THREE OTHER OFFICERS AS BEING IMPLICATED IN THE ATTEMPTED COUP, INCLUDING THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NORTHERN REGION ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE, LIEUTENANT COLONEL ASSASIE. HOWEVER, COLONEL ASSASIE HAS DENIED BEING CONNECTED WITH THE PLOT.

DURING THE WEEKEND HE MET BRIGADIER AFRIFA AT THE AIR AIRBORNE TRAINING SCHOOL IN TAMALE. BRIGADIER AFRIFA HAS NOW TAKEN COMMAND OF THE TAMALE POST.
