  • Description

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was received by the Dean of Westminster as she arrived at Westminster Abbey, April 14, for the traditional Maundy service, and to distribute specially minted silver "Maundy Money" to 34 old people. The 34 each represent a year of the sovereign's age. It is the first time that any person other than the Sovereign or the Lord High Almoner has distributed Maundy money.

After the service, the Queen Mother passed through a Guard of Honour, mounted by the Yeomen of the Guard, and was introduced to four children who - in accordance with tradition - carried nosegays of spring flowers and sweetly smelling herbs.

From the 4th century, Kings have washed the feet of paupers and then presented them with food, clothes and money. Since 1754 the foot-washing has been abandoned and the ceremony now consists of the distribution of Maundy money.
