  • Description

A WEST INDIAN DELEGATION - INCLUDING FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER SIR GRANTLEY ADAMS - VISITED THE UNITED STATES MISSILE LAUNCHING SITE AT CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, AUG 30. THEIR VISIT COINCIDED WITH AN UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO LAUNCH A "MINUTEMAN" INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE FROM AN UNDERGROUND SILO.

BEFORE WATCHING THE FIRING, THE DELEGATION INSPECTED THE BLOCKHOUSE AND LISTENED TO A LECTURE ON THE EQUIPMENT AND THE OPERATION. THEY WERE PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN THE TESTING CENTRE, AS THE US HAS FOUR ATLANTIC MISSILE TRACKING STATIONS ON WEST INDIES TERRITORY.

A SPLIT SECOND AFTER THE FIRING OF THE 60-FEET-LONG "MINUTEMAN" FLAMES AND SMOKE BURST FROM THE CONCRETE-LINED PIT AND THE MISSILE LURCHED IN MIDAIR, FALLING BACK INTO THE LAUNCHING AREA. A HUGE BALL OF FIRE WAS HURLED HUNDREDS OF FEET INTO THE SKY, PROVIDING THE VISITORS WITH AN UNEXPECTED SPECTACLE. THE REMAINS OF THE MISSILE SUPPOSED TO HAVE MADE A 4,600 MILE FLIGHT - WERE SCATTERED ACROSS A FEW HUNDRED SQUARE YARDS OF CAPE CANAVERAL SCRUBLAND. THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES; AND THE AIR FORCE REPORTED LATER THAT THE SILO AND LAUNCHING EQUIPMENT WERE UNDAMAGED BY THE MISHAP.
