Background: The tour of Chilean Foreign Minister Hernan Cubillo Sallato to several Western European capitals has sparked protests, demonstrations and hunger strikes in several of the capitals. The tour has been seen as an attempt by Chile's military government to re-establish normal diplomatic relations in Europe. It coincides with the sixth anniversary of the coup that toppled President Salvador Allende.
In Rome, Italy on Tuesday (11 September) the six Chilean's who began a hunger strike four days earlier (7 September) joined with other protestors outside the Chilean Embassy. They were continuing their hunger strike in protest against the disappearance of hundreds of people in Chile since 1973.
Tuesday was the anniversary of the assassination of Salvador Allende, and the end of his Socialist regime in Chile.
The Chilean Embassy door in Rome remains shut but back in Chile, the government of General Augusto Pinoch after international protests is reviewing the laws banning strikes in certain industries, and says it is willing to open the door to political exiles if they agree not to take part in subversion.
In Paris, France, more hunger strikers in the St. bernard Church also protest the disappearance of members of their families.
On the walls are pictures of some of the missing. The visit to France of Chile's Foreign Minister has been met with protests not only against the government he represents but against French arms sales to Chile.
The issue of exiled and missing Chileans throughout Western Europe are being brought strongly to the attention of Foreign Minister Cubillos. In particular there have been appeals for an investigation of at least 651 persons reported missing since the military took power. These protestors are concerned about relatives reportedly killed and their bodies concealed in a disused lime kiln. Their remains were found after a man spoke to a priest in a confession.
