INTRODUCTION: Delegations from 14 African countries met in Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast on Wednesday (9 March) for talks on energy cooperation.

SYNOPSIS: Abidjan itself has one of the most up to date electrical generating stations in west Africa, so it was fitting that the meeting should be held in the Ivory Coast. The goal of the meeting is to discuss merging electrical production and communication in the west equatorial region of Africa. This station provides electricity for all Abidjan's third of a million people.

The conference lasted for three days. It was opened by Mr. Mamadou Coulibaly, President of the Economic and Social Council.

    M. Konan Lambert, on the left, the President of the African Union of Producers, Distributors and Conveyors of Electrical Energy and M. Coulibaly told delegates that the world oil crisis had shown cooperation was needed in the energy field. The delegates agreed that a joint electrical research programme was an essential part of such cooperation.
