  • Description

TWO GUARDS AND FOUR PRISONERS DIED IN A RIOT WHICH BROKE OUT IN THE GUANABRA STATE PENITENTIARY, NEAR RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL ON CHRISTMAS DAY, DECEMBER 25, AFTER PRISONERS HAD MUTINIED AFTER BEING GIVEN WHAT THEY CLAIMED WAS BAD FOOD.

THE 1,300 PRISONERS FIRST CAPTURED THREE GUARDS AND GAINED POSSESSION OF A NUMBER OF SUB-MACHINE GUNS AND AMMUNITION. TWO OF THE GUARDS MANAGED TO BREAK FREE, BUT THE THIRD WAS SEATED TO DEATH. AS THE RIOT SPREAD, TROOPS WERE CALLED TO THE PRISON, AND SURROUNDED THE BUILDING.

TWENTY CONVICTS AND SOLDIERS WERE INJURED IN THE EXCHANGE OF SHOTS. THE PRISONERS THREW MOLOTOV COCKTAILS OVER THE PRISON WALLS AND THE POLICE REPLIED WITH TEAR GAS BOMBS, TO HOLD THEM BACK.

BEFORE THE TROOPS WERE CALLED IN, POLICE AUTHORITIES TRIED TO GET A TRUCE, BUT FAILED, THEN TROOPS WERE GIVEN ORDERS TO TAKE THE PRISON BY FORCE. WHEN THE FIGHTING ENDED, FOUR CONVICTS WERE DEAD, AND ANOTHER GUARD HAD BEEN KILLED.

AS THE INTERIOR OF THE PRISON WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED, THE PRISONERS HAVE BEEN MOVED TO MILITARY BARRACKS.
