  • Description

More than 1,000 mourners from Middle East countries filed through the West End of London today (1 October) in Memory of President Nasser of the United Arab Republic.

In a quiet and solemn procession, Arabs, who had come from throughout Britain for the ceremony, carried flowers and portraits of the dead President from Whitehall to London's Islamic centre near Regent's Park.

The procession, which was almost entirely male, took place on the same day as President Nasser's funeral was held in Cairo. The comparatively few women in the procession wept silently and Arab school children were among the mourners.

At the Islamic mosque a service was held in memory of the Egyptian President.
