Background: THE HINDU-MOSLEM COMMUNAL CLASHES IN CALCUTTA OVER DISTURBANCES IN THE NEIGHBOURING AREAS OF EAST PAKISTAN ON JANUARY 11 RESULTED IN MORE THAN 60 PERSONS KILLED AND SOME 200 INJURED.

THE DEATHS WERE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY STABBINGS AND FIRE. POLICE AND TROOPS WERE CALLED OUT TO BREAK UP THE RIOTS. UNLIKE THE REST OF INDIA, HINDUS ARE IN THE MINORITY AROUND CALCUTTA.

ABOUT 3,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN CALCUTTA AND WEST BENGAL. A DUSK-TO-DAWN CURFEW WAS ORDERED IN SEVERAL TOWNS TO DISPENSE CROWDS COMMITTING ARSON AND BEHAVING IN A VIOLENT MANNER.

THREE MORE AREAS OF CALCUTTA CITY HAVE BEEN TAKEN OVER BY INDIAN TROOPS, BRINGING TO EIGHT THE NUMBER OF DISTRICTS NOW UNDER MILITARY CONTROL.

DESPITE A FEW MINOR INCIDENTS IN THE CURFEW BOUND AREAS, THE SITUATION IN THE CITY SHOWED CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT.

MEANWHILE, HUNDREDS OF EVACUEES ARE BEING HOUSED IN A ROUGHLY CONSTRUCTED CAMP WHERE THEY ARE GIVEN FOOD. SOME OF THEIR HOUSES HAVE BEEN BADLY DAMAGED.

A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT ISSUED RECENTLY SAID ORDER HAD BEEN RESTORED AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES TAKEN AGAINST A RECURRENCE OF FURTHER TROUBLE.
