  • Description

Tonight Mr Macmillan was given a civic reception at Delhi's historic Red Fort in the room where once Shah Johan's famous Peacock Throne was kept.

Outside a crowd of nearly 10,000 gave him one of the biggest welcomes ever accorded a visiting foreign statesman. Apparently moved by the enthusiasm he departed from the text of his prepared speech.

He said: "I should like to take this message to my countrymen, my Queen, and my people. If I could give them some little picture of what this scene has been tonight I think my visit here will have been well worth while."
Replying to the address of welcome, given by the President of the Delhi Municipality, Mr Macmillan said that at the time when India's flag was unfurled over the Fort by Mr Nehru "we in Britain rejoiced that at the same time India chose to remain as a free and equal partner in the family of the Commonwealth."
"Though August 15th 1947 was a day of parting it was also a day of reunion. The old relationship was dissolved and a new partnership begun, which I believe will last for ever". Mr Macmillan also paid tribute to Mr Nehru, who he said was senior to all Premiers of the Commonwealth.

Mr Nehru said he hoped the relationship between India and Britain would grow. He commended the peaceful transference of power 10 years ago. The presence of Mr Nehru was taken by many to be a gesture of friendliness and approval.
