  • Description

The bodies of three French members of the crew of the Libyan aircraft shot down by Israeli fighters last Wednesday (21 February) were flown to Paris on Tuesday (27 February).

The coffins, covered with floral tributes, were put on board the first Air France liner to reach Israel since French air traffic control operations were taken over by the military authorities on Monday (26 February) evening. It was a Boeing 727 -- a similar aircraft to that in which the crewmen and more than 100 passengers died.

Following the shooting-down incident, Israel has offered compensation to the victims' families. Foreign Minister Abba Eban said the offer stemmed from humanitarian feelings and a desire to express sympathy. The Knesset--Israel's Parliament--on Tuesday (27 February) approved by 36 votes to three a statement by Defence Minister General Moshe Dayan that the incident was a "grievous catastrophe" in circumstances under which the order for the airliner to land was unavoidable.
