  • Description

One British soldier was shot dead and another wounded at Crossmaglen, after two British armoured cars reportedly strayed across the border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic and were ambushed by six armed men. Crossmaglen is bisected by the border.

The men, who had escaped the ambush in one of the armoured cars, were hit when they had got back over the border into Northern Ireland, caught in a fusillade of fire said to come from the Irish Republic side. The first part of this film dealing with the ambush incident and shooting is from Telefis Eireann, in black and white.

The other British soldier to be shot during the day was hit by a single shot in the head while on duty on the motorway out of Belfast. His condition was critical on Sunday night.

There were a series of explosions causing damage to offices in Belfast during the day, and a blast brought down high tension cables across the main road from the city to Belfast airport.

Another blast wrecked the customs post on the main road from Belfast to Dublin, near Newry on the border with the Irish Republic.

All told Northern Ireland suffered 16 explosions in the 24 hours to seven o'clock on Sunday night.
