Background: A gas explosion in the heart of London's main shopping are injured three workmen on Sunday (18 February). The workmen were working on gas pipes during the construction of the capital's new Fleet underground line.
One of the men was severely burnt, but the others received only minor burns. The normally-crowded pavements of Oxford Street were almost deserted, and there were no other injuries. Shopfronte and windows were blown out by the explosion.
Firemen arrived quickly and soon had the fire under control. Despite a five-day old work-to-rule by gas workers, maintenance-men were standing by to repair the pipe.
