Background: ALONG THE 750-MILES (1,200 KILOMETRES) OF THE FRONTIER DIVIDING EAST AND WEST GERMANY, PATROLS BOTH SIDES SPEND A LOT OF TIME WATCHING EACH OTHER'S ACTIVITIES.THE WEST GERMAN CUSTOMS OFFICERS US HIGH-POWER BINOCULARS AND CAMERAS TO SEE AND RECORD WHAT IS HAPPENING ALONG THE BOUNDARY FENCE.

BOTH SIDES ARE LOOKING FOR SIGNS OF ESPIONAGE ACTIVITIES, AS WELL AS CHECKING THAT SMUGGLERS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET THROUGH THE BARBED-WIRE EMPLACEMENTS.AND NOT ONLY IS THIS SECURITY OPERATION MOUNTED ALONG THE LAND FRONTIER, PATROL BOATS, TOO, ARE ON CONSTANT WATCH AT THE MOUTH OF THE TRAVE RIVER NEAR LUBECK.

SMALL PATROL BOATS OF THE CUSTOMS SERVICE WITH A CREW OF 8 MEN CHECK ON THE PASSAGE OF GOODS AND CONTROL RIVER TRAFFIC.THE FREQUENTLY PICK UP PROPAGANDA LEAFLETS FROM THE EAST GERMAN ZONE WHICH ARE ENCASED IN COLOURED PLASTIC BALLS.OCCASIONALLY, TOO, THEY PICK UP PEOPLE ATTEMPTING TO GET INTO WEST GERMANY BY CROSSING THE RIVER IN SMALL BOATS.IT IS A TASK THAT COULD BECOME DANGEROUS: SINCE THEY ARE UP AGAINST LARGE MINE-SWEEPERS OF THE EAST GERMAN NAVY EMPLOYED ON SIMILAR OPERATIONS.
