THE NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF GHANA, MR. JUSTICE EDWARD AKUFFO-ADDO, ASSURED THE GHANAIAN PEOPLE ON?

  • Description

THE NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF GHANA, MR. JUSTICE EDWARD AKUFFO-ADDO, ASSURED THE GHANAIAN PEOPLE ON THURSDAY THAT EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW WOULD "NO LONGER REMAIN AN EMPTY PHRASE". HE WAS SPEAKING AT THE LAW COURTS BUILDING IN ACCRA AT THE SWEARING-IN OF 25 NEWLY APPOINTED JUDGES.

THE SWEARING-IN CEREMONY FOLLOWED AN INSPECTION OF A POLICE GUARD OF HONOUR BY MR. JUSTICE AKUFFO-ADDO AND THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, MR. J.W.K. HARLLEY, AND A PROCESSION OF JUSTICES. IN HIS SPEECH, THE NEW CHIEF JUSTICE SAID GHANA'S GOVERNING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL HOPED THAT THE NEW JUDICIARY WOULD WORK HARD TO REMOVE THE STAIN AND INFAMY WHICH "DESTROYED THE PRESTIGE OF OUR JUDICIARY DURING THE TENURE OF THE OLD REGIME".

MR. JUSTICE AKUFFO-ADDO WENT ON: "I WISH TO ASSURE ALL THE PEOPLE OF GHANA THAT EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW WILL NOT ABSOLVE ANYBODY FROM THE DUE PROCESS OF THE LAW, AND ALL THOSE WHO APPEAR BEFORE OUR COURTS SHOULD BE GUARANTEED A FAIR AND IMPARTIAL HEARING".
