Swimming...and fifteen-year-old Tracy Caulkins of the United States won two gold medals and set a world record on Sunday (20 August) in women's events at the world swimming championships in West Berlin. She broke her own world record in the 200 metres individual medley final, and was a member of the winning team in the women's four by one hundred metres medley relay. Two American men also won breaststroke and backstroke sprint titles.

SYNOPSIS: Here's the women's 200 metres individual medley in progress. Tracy Caulkins led almost all the way. The American girl had entered in five individual and two team relays in the championships. Some observers, including Mark Spitz, who won seven gold medals at the Munich Olympic Games, thought she was taking on too much in her first major championships. But her time of two minutes fourteen points seven seconds clipped just over a second off her own world record, set earlier this month.

More success for the United States in the men's 200 metres freestyle. The winner, William Forrester, took an early lead that he never surrendered. His time of one minute, 51 point 02 seconds was a world championships record -- by jut two hundredths of a second. Forrester's team-mate, Ambrose Gaines, overhauled two rivals in the final to finish second from Surgey Kopliakov of the Soviet Union.

In the men's 100 metres breaststroke, Walter Kusch, considered a veteran at 24, won the gold medal, also in championship time. In previous championships, Kusch had swam in the wake of Olympic champion David Wilkie, of Britain, and his countryman, Gerald Moerken, the world record holder, who finished third in this race behind Kusch and Graham Smith of Canada.

And another gold for the United States, this time in the men's 100 metres backstroke. Robert Jackson won in 56 point 3-6 seconds, clipping more than a second from his own championship record. His team-mate Peter Rocca, took the silver, also breaking the former record.
