    President Albert Bernard Bongo of Gabon arrived in Rome on a five-day official visit on Tuesday (November 20th).

    He was greeted on his arrival at Rome Military airport by Italy's President Giovanni Leone. The two President left the airport by helicopter.

    President Bongo will also be received by Pope Paul at an official audience at the Vatican, and will alter visit the Mediterranean island of Malta.

    President Bongo has been the unchallenged ruler of Gabon for six years. The West African state has a population of 500,000.

    Italy was among the Common Market countries which supported an E.E.C. Commission allocation of GBP 10 million sterling ($ 24 million U.S.) for the controversial Trans-Gabon railway in May this year. Critics of the railway project have pointed out that it will mainly benefit European and American business interests, and do little towards raising the standard of living of the Gabonian people.
