Background: The two days international athletics match between Great Britain and Poland at London's White City Sports Arena began August 14.
Following the parade of athletes led by Poland, the captains exchanged pennants and the serious business began.
The 100 yards Men's race was won by R. Jones, Great Britain in 9.7 secs. with another Briton second.
The women's 80 meters hurdles was another win for Great Britain. Miss C.L.Quinton winning in 11.2 seconds.
In the three miles Men's race it was quite a different story, for Poland's Kasimierz Zimny put up the best track performance of the evening. In defeating Britain's pair, Stan Eldon and Derek Ibbotson in 13 minutes 15.6 secs. Zimny showed wonderful form. Second in the race was Stan Eldon whose time was 13 mine. 27.8 secs.
The Mense Mile provided another win for Poland. Z.Orywal -4mins. 6 secants-just boat his team mate S. Lewandowski.- 4 mins. 6.2 secs-leaving the British pair well Behind.
At the end of the first day, which included a new European record putt of 61 feet for British weight putter A.Rows, the scoreboard showed that Poland were three points ahead of Great Britain, Poland having scored 51 points to Great Britain's 48.
