  • Description

Thousand of spectators and participants are in Nijmegen in the Netherlands for the 59th Annual international 4-Day Marches which began on Tuesday (15 July).

In addition to thousands of individuals, the event also features marching and military units from many countries. They'll parade roughly 30 to 50 kilometres each day (10 and 37 miles) for little more than the sheer joy of marching. There are no prizes other than medals for those who complete the four days of walking.

The marches are sponsored by the Royal Netherlands League for Physical Culture. the League emphasises the importance of training before the event.

Competition is discouraged. Contestants are allowed to march at their own pace and rest whenever they want as long as they complete the daily distance before 5 p.m the marchers start out in the morning around dawn.

They don't all march the same distance. Age and circumstances are considered. For instance, girls between 12 and 15 walk only 30 kilometres (20 miles) each day but men between 19 and 49 must cover 50 kilometres (37 miles).

During the Nijmegen Marches, the town takes on a festive air as an estimated 100.000 people pour in for the event. 15,000 of them actually take part in the march.
