  • Description

In Colombo, Ceylon, events moved swiftly after July 20 general election. On Thursday, July 21, Mrs. Sirima Bandaranaike, President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party which secured 75 of the 151 seats in the Parliament, was summoned for consultations by Ceylon Governor-General Sir Oliver Goonetilleke.

A big crowd turned up at the Queen's House, the Governor General's residence, to watch the woman leader drive up. Dressed in pure white sari and blouse Mrs. Bandaranaike arrived at the Queen's
House accompanied by her son Anura and other SLFP leaders.

After talks with the Governor-General, Mrs. Bandaranaike was immediately sworn in as Ceylon's new Prime Minister. She emerged, flanked by Sir Cliver, Mrs. Sirima Bandaranaike is the world's only woman Prime Minister, and inheritor to the office held by her late husband, Mr. Solomon Bandaranaike, who was shot and killed by an assailant last September.

Mrs. Bandaraike did not contest the election, but under Ceylon's constitution she can take office provided she gets herself elected to Parliament (in a by-election) within four months. The Party is expected to find her a safe seat.

She has stressed that her Party would follow a policy of mild Socialism with accent on social welfare. She favours progressive nationalisation but has promised to leave Ceylon's tea and rubber plantations in British hands for the time being. In international affairs, the new Government is pledged to continue the policy of non-alignment advocated by the late Mr. Bandaranaike.
