  • Description

Visnews filmed - June 8 - British and Russian Foreign Ministers Selwyn Lloyd and Andrei Gromyko at the British Minister's Geneva residence, where they had a morning meeting, held at Gromyko's request.

A Russian source said the Ministers considered holding new technical discussions - presumed to be about detection of nuclear tests - but according to newspaper sources, it was the Laos question which came under discussion.

The Laos situation - a special concern of Britain and Russia since the partition of Indo-China at the 1954 Geneva Conference - has recently become important. There is danger of civil war in this small state (population - 2 million) between the anti-Communist Government - with its supporters - and the Communists with possible backing from Communist China.

In the afternoon, the 3-Power conference on discontinuance of nuclear weapon tests was resumed after a recess of one month, and there was also a further meeting of the East-West Foreign Ministers Conference, now in its fifth week. Afterwards a Soviet spokesman gave the first official indication that the Conference was nearing its end. The statement was vaguely worded, and was not commented on by Western spokesman, who agreed, however, that at the afternoon's Conference session - devoted to the Berlin question - no progress was made.
