  • Description

Dan Gurney, from California, won the opening race of the Can-Am race series for sports cars in Ontario on Sunday (June 14), reaching over 100 MPH (177 KPH) on Mosport Park's twisting circuit.

It was a thrilling contest over 200 miles (320 Kms) inbolbing Gurney, runner-up Jackie Oliver of Britain and New Zealander Denis Hulme. Although Gurney held the police position in the field of 27 cars, Hulme jumped into the lead at the start and held it for more than half the 80-lap race. On lap 45 Oliver, driving an autocoast designed by Briton Peter Bryant, moved ahead and Hulme - whose hands, badly burned last month while practising for the Indianapolis 500, where obviously bothering him - fell back. He continued to lose ground while Gurney and Oliver diced until the finish. Gurney's elapsed time was one hour, 47 minutes, 5.6 seconds, an average of 110.214 MPH. He also cracked the lap record for the 2.5 mile (4 kms) road circuit when he was clocked at one minute 1.0 seconds, an average of nearly 115 MPH (185 kms).

Gurney was driving the orange car which New Zealand Bruce McLaren, killed two weeks ago during practice in England, was to have piloted. Hulme was also driving a McLaren-built car; both he and Gurney broke the track records for qualifying times as 116 and 117 miles an hour.

McLaren had had great success in the Can-Am series; with Denis Hulme he wrapped up most of the events in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

Gurney's victory won him the Labatt's blue trophy and 14,450 dollars (about GBP5,500 sterling.)
