  • Description

THREE NEW ZEALANDERS ON FRIDAY STAGED A TAKEOVER BID ABOVE THE KANGAROO PIT OF AUSTRALIA'S PAVILION AT EXPO 67 IN MONTREAL. OBSERVERS AGREED THAT THE IMPROMPTU EXHIBIT SET UP BY THE NEW ZEALANDERS WOULD PROBABLY GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS EXPO 67'S MOST UNSUCCESSFUL.

NEW ZEALAND HAS NO PAVILION AT EXPO 67 - A MATTER OF CONCERN TO SOME MEMBERS OF MONTREAL'S EXPATRIATE NEW ZEALAND POPULATION.

IT ALL CAME TO A HEAD WHEN THREE NEW ZEALAND MEN PITCHED A TENT DIRECTLY ABOVE THE KANGAROO PIT. ALAN REID WAS "COMMISSIONER GENERAL" AND GINTY BIGWOOD TOOK THE ROLE OF "DEPUTY COMMISSIONER". DICK MACARTHUR WAS FLAG-BEARER.

AN AUSTRALIAN POLICEMAN SAW THE GESTURE AS AN AFFRONT TO HIS COUNTRY'S NATIONAL PRIDE, AND ASKED THE MEN TO MOVE ALONG.

THE NEW ZEALANDERS DRANK BEER, OFFERED THE POLICEMAN CHAMPAGNE, PERFORMED A FRENZIED MAORI WAR DANCE - BUT WOULD NOT BUDGE.

BUT WHEN AUSTRALIAN REINFORCEMENTS WERE CALLED UP THE NEW ZEALANDERS RELUCTANTLY RAISED THE WHITE FLAG.

THE TENT WAS DISMANTLED AND AUSTRALIAN DIGNITY WAS SALVAGED.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES WERE REPORTED TO BE TOTALLY UNIMPAIRED BY THE INCIDENT.
