  • Description

Paris's 16 underground railway lines of the famous Metro system were at a standstill today (Friday 22 May) as workers held a 24-hour strike in protest at their working conditions and allegedly low pay.

Because of the strike road traffic was also at a standstill at frequent intervals throughout the peak periods.

Workers commuting between suburban Paris and the city centre faced long delays as many relied on road transport. But transport was soon overtaxed, and the army was called in with a fleet of troop-carriers to help ease the burden.

Although time-tabled operations were an impossibility the army concentrated its efforts on worse-hit areas and at least kept the populace on the move.

Apart from delays on the ground, there were also troubles in the air as striking air controllers and technicians upset aircraft movements. Up and down, it was a slow day for Paris.
