  • Description

The Soviet team to play in the World Cup has arrived in Mexico City.

The Russians are drawn in group one against the host nation, Mexico, El Salvador and Belgium, and are considered the best of second-ranked teams having a formidable record ini defence.

The security at the airport as the Russian's aircraft landed was the strictest for any team arriving. Armed police stood on the tarmac as the aircraft rolled in, and security men followed the players as they went through the normal formalities and press conference.

But despite this, and the evident tiredness of the Russians, the Mexican football fans won the day, besieging the Russians for autographs and swarming around their coach.

The Russians have one major advantage -- they have been training in Southern America at roughly the same altitude as Mexico City, and this should have given them an excellent chance of getting used to play at this height.
