  • Description

INDIAN TROOPS AND POLICE BRIEFLY RELAXED CURFEW RESTRICTIONS IN RIOT-RAVAGED AHMEDABAD YESTERDAY (FRIDAY), TO STAVE OFF A FRESH CRISIS AS MANY HOUSEHOLDS IN THE CITY RAN SHORT OF FOOD.

THE CURFEW WAS LIFTED FOR TWO HOURS DURING THE MORNING TO GIVE THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY AN OPPORTUNITY TO RESTOCK WITH FOOD AND OTHER NECESSITIES. LONG QUEUES QUICKLY BUILT UP OUTSIDE SHOPS AND STORES.

THE BREAK IN THE CURFEW - THE FIRST IN THREE DAYS - CAME DESPITE TWO INCIDENTS OF THE CITY THE PREVIOUS DAY I WHICH 17 PEOPLE WERE DRAGGED FROM TRAINS AND KILLED.

ESTIMATES NOW PLACE THE NUMBER WHO DIED IN THE HINDU-MOSLEM RIOTS CENTRED UPON AHMEDABAD AT OVER 500 PEOPLE. MORE THAN 15,000 WERE LEFT HOMELESS.

AFTER THE EXPERIMENTAL LIFTING OF THE CURFEW HAD PASSED OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT, THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY WERE GIVEN A SECOND OPPORTUNITY TO BUY FOOD FOR TWO HOURS IN THE EVENING. MANY SHOPS FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO MEET THE DEMAND FOR FOOD.
