    MEANWHILE, WITH THE CLOSURE BY THE EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENT THAT DAY OF THE NEARBY BRANDENBURG GATE - THE NORMAL LINK BETWEEN THE TWO HALVES OF THE DIVIDED CITY - WEST BERLINERS GATHERED AT SECURITY BARRIERS SET UP BY WEST BERLIN IN POLICE ACROSS THE MAIN ROAD TO THE GATE TO PREVENT INCIDENTS AGAINST EAST GERMAN GUARDS ON THE OTHER SIDE.

    A LARGE CROWD PUSHED FORWARD AND TUMBLED THE ROAD BARRIER BUT APPEALS FOR CALM BY THE WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT THROUGHOUT THE DAY KEPT TEMPERS WITHIN BOUNDS.

    ABOVE THEIR HEADS THEY CARRIED PROTEST BANNERS WHICH SAID "THERE IS BUT ONE GERMANY" AND "GERMANY FOR THE GERMANS".

    NEXT DAY, AUGUST 15, REPORTS SAID EAST BERLIN GUARDS WERE BEING REDUCED IN NUMBER AT THE BRANDENBURG GATE. THE CITY WAS CALM BUT TENSE AND WEST BERLIN'S ENTIRE POLICE FORCE OF 1300 MEN REMAINED ON ALERT.
