    THE FIRST SQUADRON OF ROYAL AIR FORCE SUPERSONIC JETS TO BE BASED IN EUROPE TODAY (THURSDAY) LEFT ENGLAND FOR THEIR NEW BASE IN WEST GERMANY. IT IS NUMBER 19 SQUADRON OF FIGHTER COMMAND WHICH IS EQUIPPED WITH LIGHTNING MARK TWO AIRCRAFT.

    NUMBER 19 SQUADRON'S LIGHTNING'S WILL REPLACE THE MUCH SLOWER JAVELIN JETS WHICH HAVE BEEN SERVING WITH BRITAIN'S SECOND ALLIED TACTICAL AIR FORCE UNDER NATO COMMAND. THEIR ROLE WILL BE THAT OF INTERCEPTORS. THERE ARE 12 AIRCRAFT IN THE SQUADRON.

    THE R.A.F'S OTHER LIGHTNING SQUADRON AT LECONFIELD - NUMBER 92 - WILL JOIN NUMBER 19 SQUADRON IN GERMANY AT THE END OF THE YEAR.

    (THE LIGHTNING MK.2 IS CAPABLE OF MARCH 2 (ABOUT 1400 M.P.H.) AND IS EQUIPPED WITH THE RED TOP AIR-TO-AIR MISSILE.)
