  • Description

The departure of United States aid officials and their families from Vientiane, Laos, began on Friday (23 May) as Laotian students continued their occupation of the U.S. housing compound.

A total of 159 Americans, mainly women and children, flew to Bangkok after the coalition Government ordered provincial offices of the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) to close immediately and planned talks for a complete U.S. AID withdrawal.

Servants who had been given equipment such as record players by the departing Americans were searched by soldiers at the compound and their goods were confiscated.

Earlier, the Foreign Minister, Mr. Phoumi Vonvgchit, said that Laotian and American officials would soon begin negotiations on revising the cooperation agreement between their two countries.

More Americans were due to leave the Laotian capital on Saturday. The agency has about 300 employees in the country.
