Mr. Roland Michener, 66-year-old Canadian High Commissioner to India, is to be the new Governor-General of Canada. He succeeds General Georges Vanier, who died last month after eight years in office.
Mr. Michener has been High Commissioner in New Delhi since 1964.
The Governor-General was formerly Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons from 1957 to 1962. He is the twentieth person to hold the post and only the third Canadian.
Mr. Michener was educated at Alberta University and at Oxford, England. He practised as a barrister and was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1953 as a Progressive Conservative.
