  • Description

United Nations secretary-General Kurt Waldheim said Saturday (February 14) that he had held useful discussions with Thai Prime Minister Kukrit Pramoj and other government leaders.

Mr. Waldheim, who flew in Bangkok for a five-hour stopover on his way to Europe from a Pacific tour, told reporters before departure that the subjects included in the talks were problems in the Middle East, Timor and the situation in Southeast Asia.

He said the problem of refugees from the Indochinese states in Thailand was one of the main topics of the discussions.

Asked if there was any possibility of repatriating the 75,000 refugees from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam now living here, Mr. Waldheim said it depends on the wishes of the refugees themselves.

"If refugees want to be repatriated on their voluntary basis, we have been willing to help them through the means of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)". He said.

Mr. Waldheim launched an appeal to UN members last year for 12.4 million dollars as aid for Indochina refugees in Thailand, about half of which has so far been raised.
