TRANSCRIPT SEQ 5: INTERVIEWER: "WHY MR. GOLUB ASKED FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM IN THE NETHERLANDS, AND WHETHER IT'S TRUE WHAT HE SAID THAT FREEDOM FOR THE RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS IN RUSSIA WAS, THE LACK OF FREEDOM WAS ONE OF THE MAIN CAUSES FOR THIS."

    MR. GOLUB SPEAKS IN RUSSIAN.

INTERVIEWER: "THERE ARE TWO REASONS BY MR. GOLUB HAS ASKED FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM IN THE NETHERLANDS, THE FIRST REASON IS THAT HE IS IN DISAGREEMENT WITH MANY CONCEPTIONS OF LIFE AND IDEOLOGY IN RUSSIA, THE SECOND REASON IS THAT IN THE WESTERN LIFE HE THINKS THERE ARE MORE CONDITIONS FOR A FREE HUMAN SOCIETY."

    MR. GOLUB SPEAKS IN RUSSIAN.

INTERVIEWER: "SECOND REASON IS THAT, ACCORDING TO MR. GOLUB, THERE IS VERY LITTLE SCOPE FOR THE RESEARCH, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN RUSSIA, APART FROM IN THE MILITARY AND THE HEAVY INDUSTRIAL FIELD. WHAT MR. GOLUB HAS SAID, THAT IN HIS FIELD, HE FINDS THAT HE HAS TOO LITTLE SCOPE FOR RESEARCH IN CELL DIVISION ESPECIALLY AS REGARDS THE RESEARCH TO COMBAT CANCER. MR. GOLUB SAID HE IS ON TO A VERY GOOD THING IN THIS FIELD, AND HE THINKS THAT IN THE FREE WESTERN WORLD HE HAS MORE POSSIBILITIES TO DEVELOP HIS FINDS."

SEQ 7: INTERVIEWER: "AND THERE I'D LIKE TO... CRITICISM HAS BEEN CORRECT."

    MR. GOLUB SPEAKS IN RUSSIAN.

INTERVIEWER: "MR. GOLUB SAID THAT FROM THE HIGHEST TO THE LOWEST OFFICIAL OF THE AMSTERDAM POLICE DID ANYTHING THEY COULD TO MAKE HIM PERFECTLY HAPPY HERE AS FAR AS CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOWED".

Background: AFTER A PRESS CONFERENCE AT AMSTERDAM CENTRAL POLICE STATION LATE OCT 11, MR. ALEXAI GOLUB, THE RUSSIAN BIO-CHEMIST WHO SOUGHT POLITICAL ASYLUM IN HOLLAND OCT 8, GAVE AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW TO VISNEWS IN WHICH HE GAVE HIS REASON FOR DEFECTING, EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT HIS WORK ON CANCER RESEARCH COULD BE CONTINUED IN THE WEST, AND REFUTED SOVIET ALLEGATIONS THAT HE HAD BEEN KIDNAPPED AND ILL TREATED BY THE DUTCH POLICE.

MR. GOLUB AND HIS WIFE WERE WITH A PARTY OF SOVIET TOURISTS IN HOLLAND, WHEN HE DECIDED TO SEEK POLITICAL ASYLUM. HIS WIFE REFUSED TO STAY WITH HIM AS HER PARENTS ARE LIVING IN RUSSIA. HER OCT 9 DEPARTURE FROM SCHIPOL AIRPORT RESULTED IN A FIGHT BETWEEN SOVIET EMBASSY OFFICIALS AND DUTCH AUTHORITIES WHO INSISTED MRS. GOLUB SHOULD PERSONALLY CONFIRM HER DESIRE TO RETURN TO RUSSIA. AFTER TALKS WITH HER HUSBAND AND DUTCH AUTHORITIES, MRS. GOLUB BOARDED THE AIRCRAFT AND FLEW BACK TO MOSCOW.
