  • Description

An official Soviet delegation took part in celebrations in Israel on Saturday (10 May) to mark the 30th anniversary of the Nazi defeat in World War Two.

The three-member group was led by Mrs. Marina Tchecheniva, who was a fighter pilot during the war and who won a Hero of the Soviet Union Award.

They joined the 10,000 people who flocked to the "Red Army forest" near the Ma'Aleh Ha'Chmisha kibbutz to celebrate the end of the Nazi regime. Many of those present were Israeli Arabs and Israeli Communist Party members made up a large proportion of the crowd.

Mrs. Tchecheniva earlier told reporters that the visit reflected the Soviet Union's interest in the area and in reaching a durable peace.

The visit follows recent unconfirmed reports that Soviet officials have visited Israel secretly to discuss the renewal of diplomatic relations which were broken off during the 1967 war.
