    FORMERLY THE PRISON HOSPITAL, SINCE 1953 THE CHAPEL HAS BEEN A SHRINE IN MEMORY OF PRISONERS-OF-WAR, WHO DIED AFTER THE FALL OF SINGAPORE IN 1942.

    THE CHAPEL HAS BEEN RENOVATED AND REDECORATED WITH FUNDS PROVIDED BY THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT AND BY TWO EX-SERVICEMENS' ASSOCIATIONS IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA - THE GUNNEDAH EIGHTH DIVISION MEMORIAL COMMITTEE AND THE MEMORIAL CLUB OF NORTH SYDNEY.

    REPAINTING HAS BEEN DONE AND NEW PEWS BUILT IN THE PRISON WORKSHOPS. PLAQUES OF BRITISH AND AUSTRALIAN REGIMENTS AND FIGHTING SERVICES HAVE BEEN FIXED TO THE WALLS.

    THE REDEDICATION SERVICE WAS CONDUCTED BY RIGHT REV. C. K. SANSBURY, AMERICAN ANGLICAN BISHOP OF SINGAPORE AND MALAYA, AND THE REV. DR. H. B. AMSTUTZ, BISHOP OF THE METHODIST CHURCH OF SOUTH EAST ASIA, AND WAS ATTENDED BY MEMBERS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY IN SINGAPORE, INCLUDING MAJOR K. CAREY OF THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY WHO REPRESENTED THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT. MANY PRISONERS WERE ALSO IN ATTENDANCE.
