DOCTORS IN NEW ZEALAND GAVE DETAILS ON TUESDAY OF WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL BLOOD TRANSFUSION GIVEN TO AN UNBORN BABY.THEY SAID THE THREE TRANSFUSIONS SAVE THE LIFE OF A BOY BORN IN AUCKLAND LAST FRIDAY.

THE BABY -- FILMED ON WEDNESDAY WITH HIS PARENTS -- HAS SINCE HAD TWO REPLACEMENT TRANSFUSIONS.DOCTORS SAID HE WAS APPARENTLY DOING WELL.

PROFESSOR GREEN, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AT THE POST-GRADUATE SCHOOL OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY IN AUCKLAND, SAID THE CHILD'S BLOOD GROUP WAS INCOMPATIBLE WITH THAT OF HIS MOTHER.

HARMLESS DYE WAS FIRST INJECTED INTO THE LIQUID SURROUNDING THE BABY.IT SWALLOWED SOME OF THE BLOOD, WHICH WAS THEN TRACED BY X-RAY.THE BLOOD WAS THEN GIVEN THROUGH A FINE POLYTHENE TUBE.

PROFESSOR GREEN SAID THE IDEA WAS TO ENABLE THE UNBORN CHILD TO LIVE A FEW MORE WEEKS UNTIL PREMATURITY HAD LOST SOME OF ITS HAZARDS.
