Background: Sir Alec and Lady Douglas Home arrived in Malawi for a two day visit, as part of the Foreign End Commonwealth Secretary's tour of East and Central Africa. The party landed at Lilongwe, the site of Malawi's new capital which is rapidly taking shape and where the British Government has provided finds for the building of the barracks to accommodate the 2nd battalion of the Malawi Rifles (Kings African Rifles).

From Lilongwe the Foreign Secretary flew to Kasungu to meet the Life President Ngwasi Dr. H. Kamuzuz Banda, who is at present engaged on a crop inspection tour of the maize and tobacco crops of the Cent ral Region. (Kasungu is a place noted in the history of Malawi where the Chewas who had settled there defeated the invading warlike tribes escaping the Zulu Kings Ghaka's despotic rule. It is even more widely known in Malawi as the birthplace of the Life Presittemt and he has built a State Lodge there, Nguluyanawambe).

At Sate Lodge, Sir Alec and Lady Douglas Home were entertained to lunch, after talks which ranged over the problems of Southern Africa and the disturbed state of the world's economies caused by the cut-back in oil production.

Later Sir Alec and Dedy Douglas Home flew back to Blantyre where they were entertained by a banquet hosted by the Hon Dick Matenje, Minister of Finance and Minister for Trade Industry and Tourism. Also present at the banquet was the Hon Muwalo Nqumayo Minister of State, who had greeted the party on arrival at Chileka Airport, Blantyre.
