Background: Continuing their drive against what are believed to be North Vietnamese bases in the eastern territory of the Khmer Republic, South Vietnamese troops last week used helicopters to lift the main body of troops into jungle fifteen miles (24 Kms) from the South Vietnamese border.

Infiltrators from the north are believed to use the area as a supply base and rest centre.

Contact with the Communists has been light, but the operation is judged worthwhile by the South Vietnamese as a way of keeping them off balance.

The sweep into the Khmer Republic is one of three launched by the South Vietnamese against a reported Communist buildup along South Vietnam's western borders.

SYNOPSIS: South Vietnamese forces sweeping the eastern territory of the Khmer Republic have moved into thick jungle in their search for North Vietnamese supply and contact bases. The South Vietnamese troops entered the Khmer Republic on March 9th as part of a three-pronged assault on a reported Communist buildup against the South. The drive was in jungle 15 miles from the South Vietnamese border.

There has been only light contact with the communists but a helicopter assault netted twelve prisoners.

One man admitted he was a Viet Cong doctor who treated the wounded in the jungle. There were also some women taken. They were Vietnamese and so presumed to be working for the Viet Cong.

This territory is front line for the South Vietnamese. Here it is believed North Vietnamese infiltrators return from their missions in south Vietnam to get new orders, pick up supplies and rest before going back to more fighting. The South Vietnamese say the operation keeps the Communists off balance.
